WHO I AM

Dr. Velasco earned his bachelor’s degree in both English and French from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his Master of Education degree from National University. He spent the first part of his career in the field of international/cross-cultural education as an instructor, administrator, student counselor, director, and Chief Academic Officer at a variety of language, vocational, and post-secondary institutions.

 

His role as an international student counselor prompted him to diversify his education, and he soon earned a master’s degree in psychology from Antioch University. During this time, he opened a private practice in Los Angeles specializing in existential positive psychology. He then continued on to The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, where he was one of the first students to graduate with a Ph.D. in International Psychology. He completed his dissertation research in Los Angeles and Tokyo, Japan.

 

Dr. Velasco currently resides in Tokyo, Japan, where he is teaching, consulting, lecturing at conferences, conducting several research projects, and continuing his positive psychology private practice with a focus on international and multinational organizations and intercultural communication.

 

He is an active member of the International Council of Psychologists, the Japanese Psychological Association, the Society for Intercultural Education, Training, and Research, and Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages.
